Spelling Bee
The New York Times Spelling Bee is a popular word puzzle game published by The New York Times. The game presents players with a honeycomb-shaped grid of seven letters, one at the center and the others surrounding it. The goal is to create as many words as possible from these letters. Here are the key rules to note:
- Word Length: Words must be at least four letters long.
- Central Letter: Each word must include the center letter of the honeycomb.
- Letter Repetition: Letters can be used multiple times in a word.
- Validity of Words: The words should be part of standard English language. Proper nouns, hyphenated words, and words with punctuation (like apostrophes) are not allowed.
The game scores players based on the length of the words they find. Here's how the scoring works:
- Four-letter words are worth one point each.
- Words with five letters or more earn points equal to their length.
- Words that use all seven letters at least once are considered a "pangram" and score seven extra points.
The game defines different ranks based on the score, starting from "Beginner" and going all the way up to "Genius". If the player manages to find all the possible words for a given day, they've reached "Queen Bee" status.
The Spelling Bee puzzle is updated with a new set of letters each day at 3:00 AM Eastern Time.
